A Bahrain residence permit is the permit that lets a foreign national live in the Kingdom. Employees, investors and their families usually receive it through the Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA), with a work permit, an investor visa or a family (dependant) permit. Nationality, Passports and Residence Affairs (NPRA) issues Golden Residency, self-sponsorship and other relatives' permits. Fahdan handles the application, renewal and family sponsorship for you.

Bahrain issues residence permits through two authorities. LMRA issues permits linked to work or to a company: employee work permits, the investor visa and family (dependant) permits. NPRA issues residence that is not tied to an employer, such as Golden Residency, self-sponsorship and permits for a resident's parents.
| Permit | Who it is for | Who issues it | Validity and renewal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Work residence permit | Expatriate employees hired by a Bahrain company | LMRA. The employer applies on its Commercial Registration (CR) through the Expat Management System (EMS) | The permit period matches the employment contract. One- and two-year permits can be renewed up to six months before expiry |
| Investor visa | Partners and shareholders named on a Bahrain company's CR | LMRA, through EMS | Six months, one year or two years, renewable while the CR is active and the company meets LMRA's conditions |
| Family (dependant) permit | The spouse and children up to age 24 of an expatriate employee or investor | LMRA. The employer applies | Renewed together with the main permit |
| Permit for a resident's direct family members | A resident's father, mother and children over 24 | NPRA | Issued and renewed by NPRA. Holders may not work unless an official work permit is issued |
| Golden Residency | Property owners, long-term residents (employed or retired), retirees and talented individuals who meet NPRA's criteria | NPRA | Long term. NPRA describes it as permanent residency, with an administrative fee due every 10 years |
| Self-sponsorship residence permit | Investors, retired foreigners, property owners and their families who meet NPRA's conditions | NPRA | The investor permit is issued for two, five or ten years. Other categories follow NPRA's conditions |
NPRA also issues student residence permits, permits for the foreign wife of a Bahraini citizen, and permits for the children of Bahraini mothers married to foreigners. Setting up a company? The full list of NPRA permits is on NPRA's residence permit services page.
Any foreign national who wants to live in Bahrain, rather than visit, needs a valid residence permit. You get it through employment, business ownership or family sponsorship. A visit visa or eVisa lets you enter Bahrain, but it is not a residence permit.

Expatriate employees and investors can sponsor their spouse and children up to age 24 through LMRA, with the employer submitting the application. At the time of writing (September 2026), LMRA requires the employee's net monthly salary, as registered with the Social Insurance Organization (SIO), to be at least BHD 400. Family members do not need a medical examination, and their permits are renewed together with the main permit.
Parents, brothers and sisters, and children over 24 apply through NPRA instead. NPRA issues and renews a residence permit for a resident's father, mother and children over 24. The applicant must be inside Bahrain to apply, each person needs a separate application, NPRA asks for proof that the sponsor's monthly income is at least BHD 1,000, and holders may not work, paid or unpaid, unless an official work permit is issued. See LMRA's rules for dependants' residence permits and NPRA's permit for residents' direct family members.
The exact list depends on the permit type. These are the documents LMRA and NPRA usually ask for. We check every document before anything is filed.
Documents in other languages need a translation into Arabic or English, and documents issued abroad usually need attestation. Fahdan arranges MOFA, embassy and notary attestation and translation for you.
How you check depends on who issued the permit. Work, investor and family permits are filed with LMRA in its Expat Management System (EMS), so your employer's authorised person, or Fahdan as your PRO, can follow the application there. NPRA permits go through NPRA's own channels, and eVisas have a separate status check.
When Fahdan files your permit, we follow it at every stage and tell you when your biometrics appointment and printing are due.
LMRA one-year and two-year permits can be renewed from six months before they expire, from inside or outside Bahrain, as long as the current permit is still valid. Family permits are renewed together with the main permit. NPRA permits for a resident's parents and children over 24 are renewed while the holder is living in Bahrain.
NPRA offers a grace period service for residents whose residency has expired, so they can transfer or leave Bahrain. The guarantor or an authorised person applies while you are in Bahrain, with a letter of commitment that explains the request. Check first with LMRA that your LMRA grace period is still valid.
The simplest way to avoid this is to start renewal early. Fahdan tracks your permit and your family's permits and files the renewal before they expire. See NPRA's grace period service.
Fahdan's PRO team handles work visas, residence permits, family sponsorship, renewals and document attestation with LMRA, NPRA and MOFA. We check your documents, file the application and follow it until the permit is issued. You only attend in person where the rules require it, such as biometric enrolment at LMRA.
