Bahrain Residence Permit: Types, Status Check and Renewal

Apply, check, renew and sponsor your family, with one team handling the paperwork

A Bahrain residence permit is the permit that lets a foreign national live in the Kingdom. Employees, investors and their families usually receive it through the Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA), with a work permit, an investor visa or a family (dependant) permit. Nationality, Passports and Residence Affairs (NPRA) issues Golden Residency, self-sponsorship and other relatives' permits. Fahdan handles the application, renewal and family sponsorship for you.

What Types of Residence Permit Does Bahrain Issue?

Bahrain issues residence permits through two authorities. LMRA issues permits linked to work or to a company: employee work permits, the investor visa and family (dependant) permits. NPRA issues residence that is not tied to an employer, such as Golden Residency, self-sponsorship and permits for a resident's parents.

Types of Bahrain residence permit, who they are for and who issues them

NPRA also issues student residence permits, permits for the foreign wife of a Bahraini citizen, and permits for the children of Bahraini mothers married to foreigners. Setting up a company? Who Needs a Residence Permit in Bahrain?

Any foreign national who wants to live in Bahrain, rather than visit, needs a valid residence permit. You get it through employment, business ownership or family sponsorship. A visit visa or eVisa lets you enter Bahrain, but it is not a residence permit.

  • Employees. Your Bahrain employer applies to LMRA for your work permit. Your residence permit is printed once the permit is approved.
  • Founders and shareholders. You apply for the investor visa after your company's CR is issued and the company is registered with LMRA. Start with company formation in Bahrain.
  • Spouses and children up to 24. They receive a family (dependant) permit through LMRA, sponsored by the employee or investor.
  • Parents and children over 24. They apply to NPRA for a residence permit for a resident's direct family members.
  • Retirees and property owners. They can qualify for Golden Residency or a self-sponsorship residence permit from NPRA.

Family Residence Permit in Bahrain

Expatriate employees and investors can sponsor their spouse and children up to age 24 through LMRA, with the employer submitting the application. At the time of writing (September 2026), LMRA requires the employee's net monthly salary, as registered with the Social Insurance Organization (SIO), to be at least BHD 400. Family members do not need a medical examination, and their permits are renewed together with the main permit.

Parents, brothers and sisters, and children over 24 apply through NPRA instead. NPRA issues and renews a residence permit for a resident's father, mother and children over 24. The applicant must be inside Bahrain to apply, each person needs a separate application, NPRA asks for proof that the sponsor's monthly income is at least BHD 1,000, and holders may not work, paid or unpaid, unless an official work permit is issued. See LMRA's rules for dependants' residence permits and NPRA's permit for residents' direct family members.

What Documents Do You Need for a Bahrain Residence Permit?

The exact list depends on the permit type. These are the documents LMRA and NPRA usually ask for. We check every document before anything is filed.

For you, the main applicant

  • A passport valid for at least six months (LMRA recommends at least two years).
  • If you apply from outside Bahrain: a medical report no older than two months from a centre accredited by the Gulf Health Council (Wafid). If you already live in Bahrain, this report is not needed with the application.
  • For the investor visa: a current CR extract that shows you as a partner or shareholder.
  • Your previous personal (CPR) number, if you have lived in Bahrain before.
  • For NPRA's permit for a resident's parents and children over 24: a passport valid for at least six months, the sponsor's salary slip or bank statement, health insurance and, for children, a non-marriage declaration.

For your family

  • A passport for each family member, valid for at least six months.
  • A marriage certificate in Arabic or English. Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) attestation is needed in some cases, for example when the spouse's name does not appear in the passport.
  • Children's birth certificates in Arabic or English, attested by your home country's embassy in Bahrain and by Bahrain's MOFA.
  • Health insurance for each family member that covers the full period of the main residence permit.
  • If only one parent sponsors the children: a no-objection letter from the other parent, or divorce and custody documents, attested as required.
  • If your family is already in Bahrain on a visit visa or another permit, that permit must still be valid when you apply.

Documents in other languages need a translation into Arabic or English, and documents issued abroad usually need attestation. Fahdan arranges MOFA, embassy and notary attestation and translation for you.

How to Check Your Bahrain Residence Permit Status

How you check depends on who issued the permit. Work, investor and family permits are filed with LMRA in its Expat Management System (EMS), so your employer's authorised person, or Fahdan as your PRO, can follow the application there. NPRA permits go through NPRA's own channels, and eVisas have a separate status check.

  1. Work, investor and family permits (LMRA). Ask the company's authorised person or your PRO to check the application in EMS. LMRA first verifies the application, then the permit fee is paid and the work permit is printed.
  2. After approval. The residence permit is printed through Bahrain's National Portal (bahrain.bh), and the employee or investor attends LMRA in person for photo, signature and fingerprints.
  3. NPRA permits. For permits such as the residence permit for a resident's parents, NPRA lists its website (for renewals), the eGovernment portal and its office at the Muharraq Security Complex as service channels.
  4. eVisa applications. If you applied for an eVisa to enter Bahrain, use "Check Application Status" on evisa.gov.bh. An eVisa is not a residence permit.

When Fahdan files your permit, we follow it at every stage and tell you when your biometrics appointment and printing are due.

How Do You Renew a Bahrain Residence Permit?

LMRA one-year and two-year permits can be renewed from six months before they expire, from inside or outside Bahrain, as long as the current permit is still valid. Family permits are renewed together with the main permit. NPRA permits for a resident's parents and children over 24 are renewed while the holder is living in Bahrain.

Before you renew

  • Keep your passport valid. LMRA needs at least two months of passport validity to renew an investor permit.
  • For investors: keep the company's CR renewed and active with MOIC, because your permit depends on it. See CR renewal.
  • Make sure the company owes no fees or other dues to LMRA.
  • Some occupations need a periodic medical check, every two years, before the permit can be renewed.
  • After renewal, the residence permit is printed through the National Portal or through NPRA.

If your residence permit has expired

NPRA offers a grace period service for residents whose residency has expired, so they can transfer or leave Bahrain. The guarantor or an authorised person applies while you are in Bahrain, with a letter of commitment that explains the request. Check first with LMRA that your LMRA grace period is still valid.

The simplest way to avoid this is to start renewal early. Fahdan tracks your permit and your family's permits and files the renewal before they expire. See NPRA's grace period service.

How Fahdan Handles Your Residence Permit

Fahdan's PRO team handles work visas, residence permits, family sponsorship, renewals and document attestation with LMRA, NPRA and MOFA. We check your documents, file the application and follow it until the permit is issued. You only attend in person where the rules require it, such as biometric enrolment at LMRA.

  1. Tell us your situation. A new permit, a family permit, a renewal or a change. We confirm which authority handles it and which documents it needs.
  2. Document check. We review passports, certificates and company papers before anything is filed, and arrange translation or attestation when a document is not yet acceptable.
  3. Submission. We prepare and submit the application through the right channel, such as LMRA's EMS or NPRA, or guide your authorised signatory where a portal requires them to act. LMRA needs the right authorisation on the company's account, such as a notarised power of attorney, and we tell you exactly what it must include.
  4. Follow-up and renewals. We follow the application through to approval, tell you when to attend biometrics, and manage your renewals and your family's renewals when they fall due.

Residence permits are part of our PRO services in Bahrain. Founders can combine them with company formation and the investor visa, so one team handles your CR, your permit and your family's permits.
